The Stark-Arryn alliance was one of the most consequential political and personal bonds in the Seven Kingdoms, rooted in shared history, fostered loyalty, and sealed by marriage. It shaped the opening conflicts of the narrative and ultimately became a weapon turned against the Starks themselves.

Origins and Foundations

The alliance began in Eddard Stark's youth, when he was sent to foster at the Eyrie, the mountain fortress of House Arryn. There, the childless Lord Jon Arryn became a second father to Eddard and his fellow ward, Robert Baratheon. When the Mad King Aerys II Targaryen demanded their heads, Jon Arryn raised his moon-and-falcon banners in revolt rather than surrender the boys he had pledged to protect. This act of defiance forged a bond that would endure for fifteen years. The alliance was further cemented by marriage: on the same day, Jon Arryn wed Lysa Tully and Eddard Stark wed Catelyn Tully, the daughters of Lord Hoster Tully, in the sept at Riverrun. This double wedding bound the houses of Stark, Arryn, and Tully into a powerful bloc.

The Alliance in Action

Jon Arryn served as Robert Baratheon's Hand of the King for fourteen years, and his death—which Catelyn Stark's sister Lysa claimed was murder by the Lannisters—set the story's central crisis in motion. Lysa's secret letter to Winterfell warned that the Lannisters had killed her husband, and this warning, combined with the attempted assassination of Bran Stark, convinced Catelyn that Eddard must accept Robert's offer to become the new Hand. "Now we truly have no choice," she told him. "You must be Robert's Hand. You must go south with him and learn the truth." Eddard's acceptance of the role, driven by loyalty to Jon Arryn's memory and the need to protect his family, drew him directly into the Lannister web. The alliance also shaped the next generation: Robert Baratheon proposed a marriage between his son Joffrey and Eddard's daughter Sansa, saying, "If Lyanna had lived, we should have been brothers, bound by blood as well as affection. Well, it is not too late. I have a son. You have a daughter. My Joff and your Sansa shall join our houses, as Lyanna and I might once have done." Eddard accepted this betrothal, believing it would secure peace.

The Alliance's Collapse and Legacy

After Robert's death, the alliance crumbled. Lysa Arryn, terrified of the Lannisters, fled to the Eyrie with her son and refused to aid her sister or nephew. When Catelyn brought Tyrion Lannister to the Eyrie as a prisoner, hoping for justice, Lysa turned on her, demanding, "Have you taken leave of your senses? To bring him here, without a word of permission, without so much as a warning, to drag us into your quarrels with the Lannisters." The alliance's final, bitter fruit was Sansa's betrothal to Joffrey. After Eddard's arrest, Cersei Lannister used this bond to manipulate Sansa into writing letters urging her family to swear fealty to the new king. Sansa, desperate to marry Joffrey, complied, pleading with her father's captors, "I only want to be Joffrey's loyal and loving wife." The alliance that had once protected the Starks was thus turned into a tool for their subjugation, as the Lannisters exploited the very ties meant to bind the great houses together.
